Polarbröd is a Swedish family-run business that has been baking bread for five generations. We have asked ourselves; what do we need to do to be able to continue for at least as long? Our dream is to be able to offer an even better bread, not just taste- and nutrition-wise, but also ethically. It is a journey on the way to an unusually good bread – we hope you want to join us!
Polarbröd wants to deliver the best possible bread enjoyment using the smallest possible amount of resources. We are therefore pursuing a number of projects together with our suppliers and partners, with a focus on more sustainable ingredients, energy, packaging and transport. One of our two bakeries is certified to bake organic bread and we have a growing range of organic products for our large-scale catering customers.
Smart solutions make it possible for us to renew ourselves, and we want to help preserve as much as possible of the modern world’s benefits as we can. Polarbröd has recently invested in four wind turbines. Having run our business with renewable electricity for many years, we are now taking the next step and are beginning to bake using our own wind power. This is a renewable electricity supply, which is backed by hydropower when there is no wind. In addition to this, we constantly work to become more efficient in all aspects of our business.
Our long term goal is to become a fully sustainable company by 2022. In our domestic market, we test new packaging with plastic made from 86 % renewable raw materials of sugar cane residue, reducing emissions of harmful carbon dioxide. We will continue this work, also in our export markets.
Our quest is to, in the best possible way, make Polarbröd available when it is as fresh as possible. Therefore, we freeze the bread immediately after baking and thaw it as close to the moment of consumption as possible. We call our bread quality Polarmetoden™. Thanks to this traditional method, we do not need to use preservatives, and thanks to it we can also reduce wastage. Polarbröd takes full responsibility for the bread to be transported safely in and unbroken freezer chain all the way to the customer.
To produce top-class, fresh food to our customers at the right time is a challenge. We want to do just that. And we want to do it in a way that is sustainable well into the future. Therefore, we do everything we can to make sure our transports use renewable fuels. Most of our transports in our home market – the very long country of Sweden – are made by train. Beyond that, we have started phasing in renewable fuels for our lorries As a first step, we are testing a rapeseed oil based fuel. Transports to our European customers is made with intermodal transport, as far as possible.
We want more people to contribute with insights, expertise and commitment so that together, we can create a world that is good both for ourselves and for future generations. If you like our values and our way of working, please feel free to share this. In this way, we get the strength to continue our work for an even better future.
